OPEN History
For years, we heard from many community members about the need for progressive organizations to come together to articulate a strategic and progressive platform. We also heard the need for a new kind of group process to build and strengthen relationships among Oakland groups – a process with a high level of productivity, concise meetings, transparency, that also allowed for people to work through disagreement or conflict.
At the start of 2006, a set of remarkable political opportunities presented themselves – the moment was right to launch OPEN and attempt to accomplish what so many progressives in Oakland had been asking for. Using lessons learned from prior city-wide coalition-building efforts, the Movement Strategy Center (MSC) initiated OPEN in Spring 2006. In the summer of 2007, MSC launched a 501(c)4, the MSC Action Fund, to house OPEN.
Our medium and long-term goals for OPEN are:
- Build a highly functional and transparent city-wide vehicle
- Increase the political power of progressive organizations
- Contribute to movement-building locally, regionally and nationally
- Grow the membership and capacity of OPEN while maintaining its progressive politics
